DESCRIPTION:HIGHER LEARNING MINISTRY \n2020 Annual Graduation Recognition Ceremony  \nBetween June 1st-19th – ALL High School\, College and Trade School Graduates should send the following information to the Higher Learning Ministry announcing their graduation so they will be included in the VIRTUAL Graduation Recognition Ceremony on Sunday\, June 28th. \n\nName\nPicture\nSchool/College/University\nDegree/Certification Earned\nFuture Plans\n\nALL information must be submitted by Friday\, June 19th if you plan to be included in the Virtual Graduation Ceremony.  Please send to:  Latanya_1913@yahoo.com \nGraduate Recognition Form available on Shiloh’s website – https://www.shilohmbc.net   (Click on Ministries => Higher Learning) \n2020 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION \nStudents who wish to be considered for the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church Scholarship must meet the following criteria as determined by the Shiloh Higher Learning Ministry: \n\nGraduating High School Senior (Class of 2020).\nMember of Shiloh Baptist Church.\nLetter of acceptance to either a 2-year or 4-year institution or technical program.\nOfficial High School Transcript with appropriate seal.\nG.E.D. Certification of at least 78 or a GPA of 3.0.\nA Completed Application which includes:\nA completed application form\nA typed 300-500 words essay\nThree letters of recommendation (e.g. school\, church\, community leader or employer).\n\nLetters from relatives will NOT be accepted. \nEssay Criteria: A typed 300-500 words essay. Choose one of the options below: \nOption 1:  The coronavirus pandemic has significantly impacted how we see and navigate the world. How has the coronavirus impacted you? What have you learned during the quarantine that will propel you forward in life?  \nOption 2:  Proverbs 22:6 says\, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old\, he will not depart from it.”  Please share how you will apply this scripture to your life or your Christian walk as you pursue a higher education?  \nOption 3: Why is being a Christian important to you? SUMMARY:Juneteenth Holiday
DESCRIPTION:To My Beloved Members and Friends\, \nIn 1863\, during the American Civil war\, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation\, which declared millions of slaves to be free\, the end of slavery in the United States.  More than two years would pass before the news reached African Americans living in Texas.  It was not until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston\, Texas on “June 19”\, 1865\, the people of Texas are informed that\, in accordance with the proclamation from the Executive of the United States\, all slaves are free. \nJuneteenth was originally celebrated in Texas on June 19\, 1866.  It marked the first anniversary of the day that African Americans first learned of the Emancipation Proclamation.  The holiday was celebrated by the former slaves with prayer\, fasting food\, song\, dancing and wearing new clothes to represent new found freedom. \nJuneteenth was challenged by the Jim Crow faithful of Texas.  When whites blocked blacks from using their public spaces\, black people gathered near rivers and lakes and eventually raised enough money to buy their own celebration sites. \nDespite local committees’ best efforts\, with each new segregation law\, with each new textbook whitewashing and brutal lynching in the South\, African Americans felt increasingly disconnected from their history.  They could no longer faithfully celebrate freedom in a land that still rendered them second-class citizens worthy of dying for their country\, but not worthy of being honored or treated equally for it. \nIn 1979 Texas became the first state to make Juneteenth an official holiday.  Since then\, over 40 other states and the District of Colombia have recognized Juneteenth as a state holiday. \nEvery year on June 19th we must be reminded of our great history.  Our freedom to justice and equality.  We have come too far to turn around now.  We must continue to fight for justice in America.  Let freedom ring\, let freedom ring! \nHappy Juneteenth \nPastor Steve Daniels\, Jr.
